I will give you both.
Oil, I would apply one coat, dry out in 36 hours, lightly sand a bit, then apply another coat. This should be sufficent. Use a good quality brush so you do not get brush marks.
Water, I would apply four or five, sanding lightly between coats, Drying time is maybe one hour. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
