asbestos flooring in basement

I currently have asbestos flooring in my basement covered by cheap carpeting. I would like to remove the carpeting and the tiles. Is this dangerous to do? How do I go about doing this? Is my family safe when this is being done? Is it safer just to cover over the tiles once again?
