I have a kitchen with tile that was 'new' in 1956. The tile has NEVER been regrouted - ever. Near to the sink it is virtually gone; farther away it's in pretty good shape. We are planning on re-doing our kitchen from top to bottom in 2003, but until then we are experimenting with white cabinets ( that yellow maple of the 1950's painted white). I want to freshen up the tile a bit ( ugly lemon yellow with brown trim) by smearing a layer of grout over the old. My husband thinks that we would have to take out the old grout before doing this. Is this the normal way of doing regrouting? I thought it was possible to regrout without taking out the old. Thanks! :)
