As Steve say, an extension is the way to go, and infact may be required by code. It should be easy to find box extension rings which are just retangular sleeves which slide into the hole so that the area between the wall surface and the box is enclosed. Code allows a receptacle box in a wall with a non-combustable finish (like tile) to be recessed up to 1/4" from the surface, but I believe it's best to just install the extention. BTW, a gap of no more than 1/8" is allowed around the outside of the box (pad it out with grout if necessary).
