Big holes in walls

There is hole in my mother's wall slightly bigger than a fist. I relize this is very big and I should proberly call a professional considering I never done this kind of work before. But if I were to fix this what materials would I need to purchase or make sure I have? (the hole is about 4 or 5 inches deep)
