kitchen island range hood

Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to install a range hood above my 30" range? All the regular island hoods are 10 times more costly than the wall mounted ones.
It seems that the fact that it is coming from the ceiling and not the wall makes it more expensive. Any ideas?
Can I take a wall unit and place it in a wooden box or something hanging from the ceiling?
My walls and ceiling are already exposed so the vent is not a problem. Please help? I can't afford $2,000 for a hood.
