2x4 wood tile floor

We were watching a past show of Bob's Malibu
project when he demonstrated a technique for a
floor where you cut off the ends of 2x4's and
glued them down to the floor then grout with a
mixture of sawdust and varnish. We caught just the
end of this techinque and it looked like the floor
was finished with an application of some type of
oil stain. It was a beautiful application and of
considerable interest to us. Could anyone out
there provide the details, and how-to for this
particular flooring project?
