All woodwork in a house one color?

We're having a domestic dispute. I'd like to strip the white paint for the woodwork in our house and stain it a nice rich color. My mate wants to leave the kitchen painted white.

Is this a bad thing...some rooms with stained woodwork and some rooms with painted woodwork? What do would you do about doors that sit in a doorway where one room is stained and the other is painted?

This house stuff is completely new to me...but owning a 1910 house, I'd like to do some improvements to make it a little more charming.
