paint all the stained surfaces so that all is painted. Painted surfaces are easier to maintain than stained areas. White paint or pastel paint will brighten up a room and make it look bigger. Using semi gloss paint will allow you to clean the surfaces, flat will not take a wet rag at all.
I see your point and in my home I would go to all paint.
