one positive way to check is to remove the suspect p trap and see if it is dry. also you can try fill the suspect p trap with a little water and see if the odor is eliminated. you may also just have a leaking joint in your vent stack downstream of the p trap that is letting gasses back into the house around the water in your p trap. for this just simply tighten up loose joints or locate the leak in the vertical part of the stack and plug.
