Grinding Garage Door

When I try to open my garage door with the opener, it opens about 6 inches and makes a loud grinding noise. I think its the gear box in the opener. My question is: 1) Cheaper to order a gearbox and put it in myself, 2) pay a shop $125 to do p&l, 3) buy an entire new opener and do myself. The opener is 8 years old. Bill C
