Here is another consideration short of the heat loss one. The 12 12 roof line follows through 3 gables on a north facing roof at 10000 vertical feet in Colorado. Heat tapes seem to be the only way to keep the snow from building up. Warm days in the winter melt the snow, but the snow pack is so deep it starts to build ice damms. Still think heat loss it the problem?
