I have a 9'X 12' room in my 1920's basement with four concrete walls. Like the rest of my basement, the ceiling is plaster over wood lath. I am rennovating the room for use as a darkroom. Over the past few days, I broke out all of the ceiling plaster and removed the lath so I can install drywall. Then it occured to me; is plaster dust harmful?
My question is this; I have seen conflicting information on whether plaster contains asbestos. The moderator on another board said it is 100% likely that it does. The EPA site lists common construction related sources in the home, but not plaster. Most boards contain numerous references to people removing their own plaster, without any mention of a hazard.
Am I just paranoid? I wore a dust mask throughout, but I've been afraid to remove the debris for fear of kicking up the dust again. I have two small children in the house so I'm a bit worried.
