old ceiling repair

Help! I am removing the cork tiles from my kitchen ceiling and now wish I hadn't begun. The drywall or plaster behind the tile-anchoring boards is cracked in some spots, and totally broken/missing in others. Behind the drywall/plaster sheet are thin little boards with plaster between them. (lath?) Much of the plaster is fallen out or missing.
My questions-
1. What materials do I need to repair the ceiling?
2. Should I bother to repair it, or should I just move? (haaa!)
