kitchen cabinets

I have very dark brown cabinets. since they are real wood unlike alot of the cheaper cabinets these days, i would like to restain them a lighter color. i have been told that with the stain that is on them is so dark, that the color will probably be set in the wood and not be abl to be redone. Is this true? Just think of the 70's dark brown cabinets and that is what i have. thanks nikki
