Don.... don't know if you cleaned up your fireplace yet. I had the same problem in an older home with a stone fireplace with years of soot. People told me to use boric acid. That is pretty potent stuff and I was reluctant to use it. I cleaned the front of my fireplace with a steelwire brush. It took a couple hours but it took off all the soot.
