sounds like you might use varnish only once in a blue moon? I would first make sure that the lid is on real tight, if not sure pack it up in a baggie and seal that baggie. Consider buying a smaller can for the job and have less left overs.
I do know this, do not try to add mineral spirits or anything else to thin it out, the properties will be compromised and it will not work as intended.
