This is one of those things you want to make sure before starting. We had a similar situation with a relatively small room and a wide fireplace that dwarfed everything else. I was against it but my wife took white masonry paint and lightly rolled one coat (intentionally not thoroughly covering) and the results were amazingly good. It lightened up the room and the resulting antique look of the brick made for a pleasant room.
