Hi Paul I use PL-200 construction adhesive and #10 woodscrews, counter boring and plugging the holes for the screws. I also predrill pilot holes for screws into the stringers. This takes more time than a pneumatic nail gun, but with this combination, I have never had a squeeky stair.
