can't program unit

My battery went dead and I changed it but did not realize it had to be done within 30 seconds.

After inserting the new battery and doing the reprograming as shown in the instructions, I cannot get it to work. I press access code twice, then the default code 1234, then my new code and then access code again. It flashes rapidly for four seconds indicating an error in programming. I have tried several things including taking the battery out and starting over again but to no avail. Any suggestions?????
