is running to the kitchen light switch. once that is determined then make sure the hot black wire in the j-box is tied to the black wire going to the kitchen switch. then assuming the white wire for the run to the switch is hooked up to the ON side terminal on the switch, this white wire then should connect to the black wires off the kitchen recessed light fixture, while the white wire off the recessed light should be tied to the white wire of the source/hot wire in the J-box. good luck LJ
