Rust in my new sink drain (bathroom)

Hi! Does anyone know why this might happen? And how to fix it? I had a friend install the sink and new fixtures in my bathroom sink. This was a month ago, and I have rust in the drain which keeps forming after I clean it off - my bathtub doesn't have this rust problem. I'm afraid of the damage this will begin causing over time. Do I reinstall and use caulk or putty? Help! Thanks in advance! Elizabeth
