Washing machine odor

I have the same problem in my GE Profile washer. Sewage and musty smell. I have read that it can happen from the lid being down....plus using fabric softeners they tend to build up. Also, we tend to close the door on laundry day...with the dryer and washer going simultaneosly. That probably created further humidity and more stink. We are moving soon to a new house and will have an exhaust fan installed in our laundry. I have since cleaned with vinegar and the odor is gone.
