updating old window frames

I hope someone can help me. A number of years ago, I saw on a home improvement show, someone replace the sides of a window (that held the window weights)and replaced these sides with something else that had a trnsion -like affect to keep the original windows, when put back in, opened, when needed. We have purchased a home built in 1870 and do not wish to relpace the windows, just make them more 'user friendly'.If anyone has any idea of what I'm talking about, and where I could purchace these kits, I'd be very greatful.
