over to the counter and use the hole in the sink for your hot water tap. Don't eliminate the air gap.
Drilling a hole in the counter top is easy (as long as it is formica). You may have room right next to the sink. Otherwise, you may have to pull out the dishwasher to get to the back part of the countertop in order to install the air gap.
