Nailing coped crown molding

I just got done putting up crown molding (I'm getting pretty good at coping the corners), but I'm concerned about a few things.

1. I can only nail in the bottom part since the top is so far away from the wall. Will it stay up OK?

2. I can't put a nail in close to the corners -- the molding just splits! I want the corners to be secure! How do I do it?
