Here is what I have experienced

Water Based
will not yellow
dries in about one to two hours for quick re coats
does not smell
Easy clean up


Oil Based
will yellow
Takes a day or more for drying depending on weather
Does have that noxious smell


The yellowing is the most not wanted effect especially on pine.

I would apply with a brush either water using synthetic or oil using china bristles.
