There's a commercial cleaner that I've always used. It's called Sure Klean Fireplace Cleaner. You spray it on and wipe it off. This product is designed for removing smoke and soot stains. You get a 32 ounce bottle and it will give you a good clean job. Well worth the money. ---Jack
