Craftsman 18HP Riding mower

The engine does nothing when you turn the key. When you pull the engage knob; then turn the key, you get a clicking noise. The battery is relatively new. In fact, I used my jumper cables from the battery to the solinoid(sp?) and the mower started. Cut the back yard, turned it off, tried to start it and the same ole thing! Could it be the key starter switch that is bad? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
