Painting cabinet hinges

Our house has beautiful walnut cabintes in the kitchen but also has ulgy knobs and hinges that are a cream color. I really don't want to replace the hinges because there are over a 100 to replace. Can I paint over the hinges with a stain or a dark brown paint to vover up the cream?
