Bruce, I have successfully used the nail puller that nomally, as you correctly point out, leaves divots, on nails that are part way out but whose head has broken off. I just close the jaws on the exposed shank and lever it out. This doesn't always work though, for example if the wood is very hard and or the nail rusty, it may just bit off the shank. When this has happend, I've found that vice grips give the same result. If anybody knows a good way to get the nail out (when it can't be driven in, as in salvageing lumber) I would like to hear about it.
