24 feet IS a long span,too long for a 2x10 for a live load(even a dead load which is just holding drywall).
There are several different types of wood used for floor joist and each has different grades of quality which gives each a different span ratting.Go to www.countrylumber.com/Tech Ref/floorjoistspans.htm and you will see what I mean.
My best advice is go talk to your local Building Dept. and just ask.They may require a certain type and grade of lumber to be used.They don't bite so don't be afraid to ask all the questions you want.Luck
