Remove Excess Mortar

I have new house with red brick and black mortar. My problem is the masons did a poor job removing excess mortar from the the fireplace hearth. Now that we are living in the house, I would like to get the excess mortar removed. How or what product could I use to remove the excess mortar. The product needs to be safe for indoor use.
