I just faced the same problem. I needed to cut 12” floor tiles on a diagonal. Typical score and snap cutters are not big enough to handle a 12” tile. I tried using a jig on the table saw with a mason/tile cutting blade and found that this chipped the tile as you stated. My next thought was to cut it from above. Luckily, I also have a radial arm saw. I built a jig on the table and then using the same blade made a score cut just through the glazed finish. This gave me a nice straight cut without chipping. I then made a series of cuts gradually dropping the blade each time. After about 3 cuts, I was able to break the tile fairly cleanly. Any tile that remained where the cut was made was easily nibbled off with a tile nibbler or a heavy pair of pliers. A small pair of vise grips also worked well at nibbling away any unwanted material.
