Which do you object to--the appearance of the gaps or the fact that the gaps collect dirt & dust? If the gaps don't detract from the appearance (depending on the style of house), a trick a friend used was to mix sawdust with Elmers glue & fill the joints with the mixture. Looks fine in his log house.
