Noisy pipes in apartment

I've lived in an APARTMENT for two years and each winter the pipes make such incredibly loud banging sounds that I can never sleep! I'm at my wit's end, so I'm trying the internet as a last resort.
I think it's valves in the pipes. Not constant, but every few hours it starts up and lasts for several minutes to half an hour. All night long. During the day I can ignore it, but I need sleep. Help!
I don't think contacting the landlord would help (they're not going to repair the pipes in the whole building for just me).
