one thought is maybe you can take a narrow piece like 1 inch or so high of backerboard...and hot glue it to the back of the existing backerboard and tile ...to at lease close up that wide hole with something solid. do this with maybe 12 inch pieces all alnog the long part of your tub. if the hot glue does not hold it well enough then forget this solution it will not work..maybe if you think it sounds like a good plan use an epoxy. !! Once you have pretty much closed off the hole with something solid . then fill in this closed off cavity with a 3/4 inch section of grout. after it dries well then seal the grout with a sealer. if necessary then use a silicon grout to cleanly dress up the interface between the grout and tub edge. This fix may not be feasible ..gut thought I would share this idea with you. good luck LJ
