Jason, as I had never vented a dryer in this way before, I played guinea pig with my own. I checked the line probably 3 times the first year, and maybe twice the following; nothing needed to be done. Since that time I've checked it yearly when doing other once-a-year maintenance items, and one extra time when I bought a new dryer last year, but and all I've ever had to do was wipe down just a little build up on the sidewalls of the elbow at the bottom where it enters the riser which goes straight up and out.
