Jackie, you might give Whink a try. This is actually a rust stain remover, in a brown bottle, available at most hardware, drug, and grocery stores. It's safe for colorfast fabrics and carpets, and I've found it good on many different types of stains besides rust.
NOTE: Whink contains hydroflouric acid, so be sure to wear latex gloves when using it.
