As long as the leaves are dry the mulcher does a fair job of chopping them up. The problem is the leaves do not decompose as readily as grass. If left lying on the ground it could build up into a thatch problem over the winter months with the snow laying on top. If you choose this route some raking would be advised to clean up most of the debris.
