Mike, from what you've said I'd say it's more likely this is part of the process of wood framing and trim shrinking some, which is fairly common.

The trim separations; are they straight apart at the joints, and less than 1/16" apart?

Do you have signs of cracks in drywall? In basement or foundation walls? Doors that no longer fit square, or trouble latching?
