for your viewing and for resale and for appeal. I would fix it right andthat might mean re floating it out which sounds like that will not work or installing furing strips and re hanging drywall. You do have quite a job ahead of you. If you hang 1/4 inch directly over the plaster it will begin to conform to the erratic walls behind and show up even worse.
