you need to sand very lightly on the laminate or veneer so to not go through the thin skin.

All the white wash has to come off, first pertaining to non lam areas, use course grit sand paper to get the stain off, then reduce to medium paper then to 220 grit. Always sand in the direction of the grain, cross sanding will leave marks when staining.

You want all surfaces to be as smooth as a babies bottom. When you think you are done with the 220 grit then go over it with steel wool.

When done, clean off all debris and dust and then coat the entire project with wood conditioner. Let dry and then again sand with steel wool lightly.

Now stain the project staining in the direction of the grain and re coat until desired color. Remember stain A will stain differently on each different species of wood. Meaning Minwax golden oak will not be the same on oak and pine.
