Duplicating Texture in Repairing Plaster Walls

Our challenge: repair plaster walls in inner city Detroit Episcopal church that has rough texture, to match as well as we can the old texture. Texture is lumpy but without pattern of any sort, in some cases it looks like a drip, others it looks like a rag has been used to impose texture but we cannot determine how it was done when original, around 1920's or so. Would appreciate suggestions (trying to renovate the community with Habitat).
