Personally, I would remove the furring and attach my drywall right to the joists.
If your joists are on 16" centers, I'd use 1/2" "no-sag" drywall; 5/8" fiber reinforced if your joists are centered at 24". Attach to the joists with a construction adhesive such as Liquid Nails, and preferrably 1-5/8" drywall screws, but in combination with adhesive nailing is okay, too. Was this post helpful?
