Alex, Duroc and most other cement boards can be used right up to the firebox, then covered with tile, or other non-flammable material. Adhere the cement board directly to the stone with thinset and/or anchors and be sure to mortar in any exposed edge or gaps between the stone and cement board at the sides of the firebox.
