Removing built-up wax from furniture

I have 45 year old Cherry dough-box end tables that have a build up of wax and polishes. I would like to get down to the finish again. I used a paste wax and it left a good shine, but did not remove the circles/blotches from the surface. It is not too badly damaged, but needs some TLC. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!
