Anne, My staff and I used to field dozens of questions every day that were similar to yours. Probably a majority of tile sold between 1940s and 1976 contained small amounts of asbestos as reinforcement fiber. Other common building materials include siding, furnace and pipe insulation, gaskets, caulk roofing materials, and asbestos-containing paints--such as texture paints--were used from 1920 to 1976.
Think of the number of residential and commercial buildings constructed or renovated during this period, and you have an idea of the scope.
