The only way to know is to test like Anne. As I said above, this material poses a relatively low hazard and if its time to renovate the floors, go ahead and do it. Just use reasonable precautions. Tile in 1923 rarely contains asbestos but it has been documented as the earliest use. Most is present after WWII.
