Thanks Tom. I am not sure what the subfloor is below the mastic,but my brother-in-law told me that it is the original sub-flooring made out of wood but before plywood. It's sort of like particle board but a lot more durable. It seems pretty solid and even with the mastic the surface is pretty smooth. The mastic is just old and messy, but I was planning on putting in a pergo floating wood floor. I am sure that I will have to determine if the floor is level won't I?
